Is an umbrella policy right for you?
A MILE-STONE home and auto policy provides a minimum level of liability coverage. But, in some cases, it isn't enough. Here's some information to help you decide whether an umbrella policy is right for you.
What is Umbrella Insurance?
An umbrella policy is an added layer of protection that offers higher limits to pay for injuries and damages others suffer because of your negligence. For example, say you are found negligent in an auto accident and required to pay for another person's injuries. Once you reach the limits of your MILE-STONE policy, the umbrella kicks in to cover the additional costs above that, up to your umbrella limit.
What does umbrella insurance cover?
The policy applies to you and others living in your home, including a spouse, children, or others in your care younger than age 21. It extends the limits of your primary insurance policy for:
- Autos
- Home
- Watercraft
- Recreational vehicles
- Personal injury liability such as libel, slander, defamation of character, and false arrest
In addition, the coverage follows you, meaning you're protected worldwide. The most common limit for an umbrella policy is $1 million, and we offer higher limits.
Why do I need umbrella insurance?
A lot of people sue, and they sue for a lot. The more assets you have, the more protection you need — particularly when court awards are trending increasingly higher. An umbrella policy offers that extra protection. Plus, it's valuable if you add a teen driver to your insurance policy. A majority of the claims covered by umbrella policies involve auto accidents, so having an umbrella policy can give you peace of mind when you or a family member are on the road.
How do I get umbrella insurance?
Umbrella insurance is relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to the amount of coverage you receive. In fact, you might be eligible for a discount if you add umbrella to your MILE-STONE policy. Talk to your independent agent to learn more or to purchase an umbrella policy.
