Summertime is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy nature. Before you hit the campgrounds, there are some safety measures that you should keep in mind to make sure everyone has a safe and memorable experience.

Follow these five tips to make the most out of your experience.

Plan safe physical activities.

Camping and spending time outdoors is a great way to stay active. From hiking to swimming, there are plenty of fun things to do. No matter what you choose to do, make sure to wear the proper protective equipment, like sturdy shoes, helmets, and life jackets. If you are planning a hike, stick to the trail to avoid poisonous plants, and don't push yourself too far to avoid injuries.

Prevent bug bites.

No one likes the pesky bugs that come with being outdoors, especially since many can cause diseases. Protect yourself by applying insect repellent that contains DEET before heading outdoors. Check for ticks daily and remove them right away if you find one. Wearing long sleeves and pants also is a good idea to keep bugs off your skin and make ticks easier to spot.

Protect yourself from the sun.

You'll likely be outside most of the time during a camping trip, which leaves you exposed to the sun. Even if it's a cloudy day, the sun rays can still reach you causing sunburn. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Wear sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes and face, too.

Practice campfire safety.

Sitting around the campfire is one of the main parts of any camping trip. Keep your fire contained to a fire pit and at least 15 feet away from your tent or camper, trees, and shrubs. Never leave your fire unattended, and keep a bucket of water nearby to put out the fire completely before leaving or heading to bed.

Prepare for the unexpected.

Anything can happen when you are camping, so be prepared. Pack a first-aid kit and plenty of water, blankets, and batteries. Also, keep an eye on weather forecasts, and have a plan for what to do in case of a storm.

Camping is a fun thing to do in the summer. Keep these safety tips in mind to have the best time on your next camping trip and enjoy your time outdoors!
