Meet the 2023 Board of Director candidates


David D. Gross

David D. Gross
Retired President & CEO
SECURA Insurance Companies, Neenah, Wisconsin

Mr. Gross became a SECURA Board member in 2014. He joined the company in 1997 as Vice President–Sales & Marketing. In August 2001, he was promoted to Senior Vice President–Underwriting Operations with responsibility for leading the Sales and Underwriting divisions. Mr. Gross was appointed President & COO in September 2013 and became President & CEO in 2014. Mr. Gross retired as SECURA’s President & CEO in April 2022 and transitioned into the role of CEO Emeritus and Senior Executive Advisor (through his official retirement in September 2022).

Prior to SECURA, he served in various marketing and underwriting management roles within USF&G Insurance, CNA Insurance, and also as an independent agent. He started his career in 1980, after earning a degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.


Dan Neufelder

Daniel E. Neufelder
SECURA Chair of the Board and Retired President of Indiana University Health
West Central Region, Lafayette, Indiana

Mr. Neufelder became a SECURA Board member in 2011 and became Chair of the Board in 2021. Mr. Neufelder retired from Indiana University Health in 2021, where he served Indiana University Health as the President of the West Central Region from 2018 to his retirement. His 42-year career also included serving Ministry Health Care, a division of Ascension Health, as its CEO. Mr. Neufelder was also the CEO of the Affinity Health System and the Neufelder Consulting Group, LLC. Additionally, he served as a senior executive for Beacon Health System (South Bend, Indiana) and the Community Health Network (Indianapolis, Indiana).

Mr. Neufelder began his career with Ernst & Young. He holds an MBA from the University of Indianapolis and a B.S. from the University of Southern Indiana. He is a Life Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives, a Certified Public Accountant (Inactive), and is a certified Mutual Director.


Barbara L. Rau

Barbara L. Rau
Distinguished Professor of Management and Human Resources
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Oshkosh, Wisconsin

Dr. Rau became a SECURA Board member in 2021. Dr. Rau served as the former Dean of the College of Business at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She currently is a Distinguished Professor of Management and Human Resources at the university. She earned her Bachelor of Science in economics with a mathematics emphasis and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Relations with a minor in Statistical Research Methods from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Industrial Relations Research Institute.

She has presented numerous papers on topics like compensation, recruitment, life balance, research methods, and employee relations at various national conferences. Beyond her teaching and research activities, Dr. Rau has applied her human resources expertise within the university by working on a strategic human resource management plan, conducting a salary equity study, and serving as a mediator and investigator for dispute resolution. She has received the MHR Teaching Excellence Award, Dean’s Faculty Excellence Award, and the University’s Edward M. Penson Faculty Award for her work. Dr. Rau is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations Research Association, the Academy of Management, and AACSB. She serves on the Boards of Evergreen Community, Junior Achievement, and is a member of the Oshkosh Chamber Economic Development Committee, Junior Achievement Laureate Selection Committee, and Leadership Oshkosh Steering Committee.


Suzanne Scanlon-Pope

Suzanne Scanlon-Pope

Reinsurance Group of America, Inc. (NYSE: RGA), St. Louis, Missouri

Ms. Scanlon-Pope is a new nominee for SECURA's Board. She is currently Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer at Reinsurance Group of America, Inc. where she is responsible for the strategic direction of the company’s Global Security and Privacy Office and the Global Technology function. Prior to this role, Ms. Scanlon-Pope worked at Monsanto Company in a variety of roles within information technology, including management and technical positions across a variety of business sectors such as Intermediate Chemicals Manufacturing and Agriculture. She is on the CxO Advisory Board for Sierra Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on early stage emerging technology companies.

Additionally, she has been recognized as one of the Premier 100 IT Leaders by ComputerWorld magazine, and as one of St. Louis’s “25 Most Influential Business Women” by the St. Louis Business Journal.

Ms. Scanlon-Pope earned her undergraduate degree in business from Texas A&M University and her Executive MBA from Washington University.


Catherine J. Tierney

Ms. Tierney became a SECURA Board member in 2008. She serves as President/CEO of Community First Credit Union, a $5.2 billion financial cooperative serving member-owners throughout Northeastern Wisconsin. She joined the company in 1976, held multiple executive officer positions, and was named President/CEO in 1994. She is a Certified Credit Union Executive, a graduate of the Credit Union Executive Development Program from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, and received an honorary degree from Lawrence University in 2019.
